In 2021, three classrooms from St Mary’s Primary School Gisborne were removed to create a new learning hub. These classrooms were repositioned on the opposite side of the school on parish land.
With the help of lending from the Catholic Development Fund and the fundraising efforts and tireless work of a dedicated committee comprising members from the Hamilton Diocese, St Mary’s primary school and the parish community, the dream of a Catholic Early Childhood Centre for Gisborne came to fruition. Bishop Steve Lowe officially opened Stella Maris on the 8th of August, 2022.
